Hi Meghna,

Do you have any plans to show your documentary on the west coast? I hope the showing went well and that we can look forward to seeing it here, please could you update us! I live in San Francisco and posted a comment on your Heart suspended site late last year. Hope all is well!

Hi Yuuki,

I agree it helps us to create our own "families" here who we can share times with and lean on when we can't physically be in our home country. I feel lucky to have both, and while they are different, I couldn't imagine not having either in my life now. I have found that volunteering for organizations that have volunteer programs set up (non-profit) can offer another way to communicate with people during the day and opens up new friendships too. I hope this year is a great one for you.

I am sure I tried leaving you a comment earlier today but it hasn't posted! Anyway I wanted to let you know I had the same problem with the web site h4help.org --I do not know whether it is active anymore but I was able to figure out that the great author behind it is part of this h4 blog (I think it is connected). I do hope it will open up again as I found it to be a great idea and resource for us all!

Thanks for your post. And it is true. Good to know that I'm not the only one, even though it sometimes feels like that. I have been living in the US for almost 8 years on TN and then H4. People who are not in that situation don't understand. They say, "you have everything, what are you worried about?" I sometimes feel like a lion in the zoo. The zoo lion has everything, still what he misses is freedom. And eventually he starts to act differently to those in freedom. It is getting increadingly difficult to deal with the situation. I volunteer but volunteering does not substitute a real job, a real income, real independence.
Thanks

Hi Palak,
I was in the creative writing business before I came to US on a H4 visa. I found that a lot of writing/editing jobs ask for a degree in Journalism/ Literature. So I enrolled for a second bachelors degree in Journalism plus minor in cinema and I am almost done. I am glad that I didn't waste the last 5 years. I also have a much better idea of how things work in the US, how people network and get things done. Going to school really helps.
Good luck!

Hello,
Its interesting to know so many people are talking and voicing their opinion about the plight of women on H4b visa. Unfortunately i am one of them. It is frustrating to be in this situation because inspite of being educated with a msters degree i cannot work to support my family in this country. I feel bored sitting at home alone the whole day. Although there is a possibility that a non-profit organization can sponsor my H1 visa, but nobody is ready to do so. I have called up and contacted several non-profit organizations but its all in vain. The people are not ready to help me just with the paper work because i am ready to bear all the cost of the visa. It is sad and disheartening that nobody is ready to help.

Well.we have to take it easy. I am peruvian, with university studies and titles as you Gariela and Gustavo.I've been here for more than 3 years.
We are experiencing something totally unfair, Of course it is!.Let's give it a chance. As Gustavo says if it doesn't work, well..come back to your country. Just remember that it was a decision you made as a family and for good or for bad you have to be there. Always one risks more than the other in a relationship..so it is US.Try to be positive.
Gabriela, looking for job is hard but no impossible i guess. I have hope. I volunteer everywhere. That helps!.MOre than one person told me that it is a very good CV to do some volunteer job, It will be easy to get a job at some point. Volunteer where you can help latins or in spanish classes as i do , many places need translators.
Have luck. if you like to talk just write back

Hi Palak,

By pratitioner, I mean a full-time writer.

As far as I know, creative writing courses will mainly train you towards fiction or poetry. I'm not that sure about MFA programs in non-fiction.

You might also want to consider journalism courses. In that case, of course, what I said about the MFA (and tenure track teaching after the MFA) doesn't hold good since Journalism programs follow the MA-Ph.D track, and you would need a PhD to teach.

As I said earlier, University jobs are the surest way to get your H1 in the arts and humanities. How sponsorship works in travel writing or designing company profiles- I'd be out of my depth there, and can't really talk about that.

All the best to you, and hope you're able to work things out.
